Vietnam Prepares Launch of Vaccine Passports
Vietnamese telecoms and technology firms have confirmed to Vietnam’s National Steering Committee for Covid-19 Prevention and Control that the national technology infrastructure is ready and suitable for the vaccine passport deployment.
Last month, the Committee had asked stakeholders to prepare for the complex logistics ofvaccinated travelers, a goal they have reached ahead of schedule. These logistics involve official, shared software and websites capable of reliably verifying traveler nationalities, vaccinations, and coronavirus test results. As the Committee noted, community health and safety is the foundation of economic development; accordingly, Vietnam will coordinate mass vaccination for its citizens and will formally adopt international vaccine passport standards.
Under the current regulations, three groups may now freely enter Vietnam provided they possess a vaccine passport:
- Vietnamese citizens who wish to return home.
- Foreign investors and businesspersons.
- International tourists
In each case, the Ministry of Health has or will soon issue detailed guidance regarding quarantine procedures, considering such factors as originating country and the type of vaccination each traveler has received. Tourists will also be subject to border controls developed in cooperation with the Ministry of Culture, Sports, and Tourism.
We may anticipate that the Ministry will encourage visitors originating from countries with strong sanitary procedures as well those that have deployed vaccination programs andachieved community immunity. Vietnamese overseas tourism may likewise be limited to destinations the Ministry feels possess adequate covid-19 precautions.
