Hoan Kiem lake is situated in Hoan Kiem district, Hanoi city. It is considered as the pearl of capital, or “flower basket  in the heart of city” as the comparison of foreign visitors.

According to scientists, the lake is the residue of Red river after changing the stream which  happened thousands of years ago. In fact, the origin name of the lake is Luc Thuy (meaning “Green Water”) due to its year-round green water. In the 15th century, the lake was renamed into Hoan Kiem Lake (meaning “Lake of the Returned Sword”) associated with the legendary restore the spirit sword for the Golden Turtle.

Hoan Kiem lake is not only a walking sights but also has a close connection with people in many aspects. In New Year Eve of Lunar calendar, many people flock to here to enjoy the spring by wandering around the lake. It is also the place of assembly for girls and boys to visit surrounding temples and pagodas. Nowadays, many couples choose the lake to be a popular backdrop for their wedding photos. In summer, it becomes a perfect destination to escape from the hot and stuffy weather of Hanoi.

Should anyone have chance to observe Hanoi from above in early summer, they will certainly be  amazed at charming colorful picture of purple lagerstroemia and red flamboyant trees. In autumn, it is incredibly romantic with willow trees planted on the edge of the lake. On national festival days such as 19th August or 2nd September, the lake attracts a lot of visitors by amazing firework displays.

The unique historical relics such as  Turtle Tower, Ly Thai To Statue, Ngoc Son Temple, Nghien, But Tower, Ba Da Pagoda…. and other modern buildings are built in harmonious combination with Hoan Kiem’s landscape. Hoan Kiem Lake, Ngoc Son Temple, The Huc Bridge (meaning Morning Sunlight Bridge) and Turtle Tower are distinct features of Hanoi capital in Vietnamese people’s heart.
