After more than two years of upgrading under a plan approved by the Prime Minister in 2012, Cat Bi International airport was put into operation officially on 12th May 2016. The upgrades enable the airport to handle 2 million passengers annually and accommodate Boeing 777, Boeing 747 and similar aircraft.
As schedule, the second stage of upgrade and extension will be completed at the end of the first quarter of 2017, allowing Cat Bi to handle more modern aircraft.
Currently, the national flag carrier Vietnam Airlines and low-cost airlines Vietjet Air and Jetstar Pacific Airlines are offering new domestic flights to and from Cat Bi International Airport including Da Lat, Phu Quoc, Can Tho, Buon Ma Thuot, Pleiku. The international flights to Thailand, South Korea, and Japan will soon be launched.
