Sung Hung pagoda, must-visit religious attraction in Phu Quoc

Sung Hung, the oldest ancient pagoda in Phu Quoc (Kien Giang) is currently an indispensable attraction of tourists.

Located in Tran Hung Dao Street (opposite Telecommunication Center, near Dinh Cau night market), Sung Hung Pagoda was a deserted cemetery. In order to celebrate a mass for the peace of the souls, the locals built 2 pagodas including Sung Nghia and Hung Nhan. Later, they merged the two pagodas into one and named Sung Hung Tu. Nobody knows exactly when the pagoda was established as well as the religious name of the first monks, just being told that it was built in the 19th century and the 5th and 6th abbots of the pagoda are Thich Dat Vinh and Thich Minh Khiem monks.

Sung Hung Pagoda has a distinctive architecture which includes Buddha hall, main hall and surrounding buildings. The buildings are mostly made of brick with ying-yang tiled roofs. The pagoda was built in traditional style “front shrine, pagoda behind”. The door heads to the North and a triangle gate leads to. a white statue of Avalokitesvara Bodhisattva (Goddess of Mercy) in the middle of the court. Surroundings are ornamental plants and a shrine worshipping Ba Chua Xu Nuong. Besides, the pagoda worships the national hero Nguyen Trung Truc. In the main hall places an altar on which the 3 Buddhas sit: Amitabha in the middle, Mahasthamaprapta bodhisattva on the right and Avalokitesvara Bodhisattva on the left.

Thanks to the distinctive architectural structure, Sung Hung pagoda with Dinh Cau, Duong Cong temple, Thuy Long Thanh Mau temple become a complex of religious attractions on the islands.
