Hanoi considers to pedestrianise more streets

Hanoi city’s People’s Committee has handed over some Departments and Sectors the proposal of Hoan Kiem district on increasing the number of pedestrian-only streets.

Earlier, on 6 June 2013, People’s Committee of Hoan Kiem district sent city’s leaders a diploma on permitting Dong Xuan Joint Stock company to enlarge of pedestrian zone to guarded area and level 1 improvement including:Hang Chieu, Hang Duong, Hang Ngang, Hang Bac, Hang Mam and Tran Nhat Duat streets with area of 19 ha.

According to People’s Committee of Hoan Kiem district, the proposal was examined and exployed since 2009 with aim of step by step constructing Old Quarters as a full walking street for pedestrians and linking with pedestrian zone of  Hoan Kiem lake and Hang Khay, Trang Tien walking streets.

Besides the target of honoring material and spirit cultural value of Old Quarters, the proposal also creates favorable conditions for craftsmen, enterprises and households to promote traditional business, particularly cuisine, thereby boosting trading, service, and tourism of the district and city.

Based on Hoan Kiem district’s proposal, Hanoi city’s People Committee appointed Department of Planning and Investment; Department of Culture,Sports and Tourism; Department of Transport, Hanoi City Police Department to examine and come to an agreement to report to City’s People’s Committee in July 2013. Currently, 3 proposed streets will be made for pedestrians only 24/24 are: Chua Mot Cot street (stretching from Ba Huyen Thanh Quan to Ong Ich Khiem street), Ong Ich Khiem street (from Le Hong Phong to Chua Mot Cot street) and Hung Vuong street ( from Le Hong Phong street to square area).

Hang Ngang and Hang Dao particularly are opened for pedestrians in the evening since 6 pm at weekends.
